THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE MARKET QUIETER BUT STEADY Moderate business was transacted on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, and although quieter conditions generally existed fairly steady levels were maintained. Offers for most classes of Government loans were renewed at the previous day's levels, with firmer support for 1937 SJ, per cent bonds. The February issue changed hands at'£lol ss, a f reduction ol! 5s on the last sale early this month. Inquiry for banks was steady, with a further appreciation in New Zealands, which gained 3d in dealing at 47s without fully satisfying requirements. Commercials of Australia gave way a penny in a transaction at 13s 10d, l>ut holders closed slightly firmer than the previous day. Increased strength developed in insurance, with inquiry for practically all issues. Nationals were done unaltered at 12s 6d and New Zealands moved up 3d to change hands at 40s 6d, at which price thero was further inquiry. South British were vainly sought at 545. Steady conditions also ruled in loan and agency. Buyers moved up another £2 to £34 for Loan snd Mercantiles but were unable to attract holders. Coals were given more attention and in gas iands improved 6d on sale at 21s, while the contributing issue was done unaltered at 15s, tho latb local salo having taken place beforo the declaration of the reduced interim dividend. Tho only other business of the day was in Northern Steam contributings, a penny firmer at 2s Id. There was some shading in support for general investments but the movements were mainly of a minor nature. For Wilsons Cements, buyers after a temporary absence came •in considerably easier at 275. Sellers continued to quote 50s. Support in mining on the whole was firmer, several issues attracting improved inquiry. Waihis were sought 3d higher at 15s 6d, sellers advancing from 15s 9d to 16s during the day.
