"MYSTERY OF A HANSOM CAB."

DUNBDIN, Tuesday
Word was received in Dunedin to-night of the death in England yesterday of Fergus Hume, the well-known author. Mr. Hume was born in England in 1859, but came to Dunedin with his parents at an early age. He was educated at the High School and the University of Otago, where he qualified as a barrister. However, it was not long before he devoted his attention to writing and made his name as an'author. After three years in Melbourne he went to England in 1888. His first book, "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab," was published in 1887 and gained wide popularity by reason of its unusual plot. It was his best-known work. . . His next book was "Madame Midlas," published in 1888.
Altogether, Mr. Hume wrote .about 20 books of the mystery type, among the later ones being "The Other Person," "The "Whispering Lane" and "The Caravan Mystery." v
