STRIKE IN SOUTH.
THE WALLSEND MINE.
OBJECTION TO A NOTICE.
150 MEN CEASE WORK.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday.
A notice posted at the Wallsend mine, Greymouth, to-day, believed by the men to indicate tho intention of the owners to work the mine on the co-operative contract system, resulted in the 150 miners at present working in the mine going on strike. A stop-work meeting was held in the afternoon and by a majority of 140 votes to 10 it was decided not to work the mine until the management withdraws the proposal. The whole question of new working agreements between tho mine-owners and the West Coast Miners' Unions is to be discussed at a conference between tho parties at Westport next week, but the union representatives consider that this new development is likely seriously to hinder them in coming to an amicable agreement. The manager of the mine, Mr. G. Smith, stated this evening that the management had no intention of withdrawing the notice to which the men had objected. It was not, meant to convey a definite indication that the mine would be worked on the new system and its withdrawal could not make any difference to the intention of the management. * _ The notice over which the dispute has arisen read as follows: —"All employees desiring to be included in a party or parties to work the mine on contract are requested to hand in their names to the mine office. Preference will be given to present employees, but such preference ends on Friday, July 15, when the list will be closed. Extra men required will be selected from outsiders, who have already applied for work."
