Sir,—Referring to the finding of a can-non-ball at Port Chalmers recently, the following may explain the presence of this About the year 1892 a sailing ship, the Ranee, caught fire at the q Uay beside k Messrs. Jolin Mill and Company's wool She was towed round to near the Queen s Dr.ve boating sheds, where there " was a small pier. An old-fashioned muzzle-loading cannon was loaded with ball and the vessel was sunk bv this <™n fire. Probably more than one sho* was fired and a ball deposited on an adjacent sandbank.
