WORKERS AND EMPLOYEES.
FRIENDLY CONFERENCE.
THE CONCILIATION COUNCILS.
[DY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON. Saturday,
The Wellington Trades and Labour Council has received a report from the Trades and Labour Councils Federation of New Zealand, which intimated that its New Zealand council had invited the Alliance of Labour to appoint eight of its number to confer with a similar number of representatives of the federation, to discuss the question of one national industrial organisation of workers for tfte Dominion. The Alliance had rejected the proposal on the ground that the question was one for the provisional national council appointed by the open industrial conference held last April.
The federation intimated that in view of the foregoing it had invited the provisional council to alter its*composition, so that'thp Federation and the Alliance would each have three representatives on the council, but no reply had yet been received.
The president of the federation reported that qn June 25 its representatives had a friendly interview with representatives of ihe New Zealand Employers' Federation in regard to the hearing of disputes before councils of conciliation. The views of both sides were freely expressed on tho present industrial laws. ~ The workers' representatives expressed the opinion that discussions on the involved issues would be conducive to the welfare of the conflicting interests by promoting better feeling , and a common understanding, thereby enabling questions to be approached in a way that would result in the settlement of disputes satisfactory to both sides. The position of the engineering industry had been specially mentioned, and a further conference, which was suggested, might take place on to the employers.
