A BIRTHDAY BALL.

JOHN BURNS AND COMPANY. FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY. Tho fiftieth anniversary of tho foundation of ilie firm of John Burns and Company, Limited, was celebrated at a particularly enjoyable ball held in tho Peter Pan Cabaret last evening. Newly-installed lights, which shone from the ceiling in an attractive rainbow of colour, clouding tho ballroom in a soft radiance, enhanced the charm of tho many pretty frocks which were worn by tho largo number of dancers present. Early in tho evening a handsome* birthday calto decorated with fifty lighted candles was wheeled on to the danco floor, tho candles being extinguished by Mr. Robert Burns and tho first slice cut by Mrs. Burns. During the dance that followed this attractive little ceremony, pieces of the cako were distributed among tho guests. A toast to tho directors was proposed by the firm's secretary, Mr. W. J. Hunter, who referred to the affection in which tho memory of tho late Mr. John Burns, founder of tho firm, and also of tho la.to Mr. J. C. Burns, his son, was held. Ho expressed pleasure ori behalf of the staff in having the opportunity of celebrating such an important event in tho firm's history as its fiftieth anniversary. In responding to tho toast Mr. Burns said the measure of success achieved by the firm had been due to tho loyalty, capability and enthusiasm of tho staff. Ho thanked them sincerely for their tribute to his late father and brother. At tho conclusion of the toasts the guests joined heartily in singing " For They Are Jolly Good Fellows."
