FATAL MOTOR SMASH.

MARRIED MAN KILLED.

DRIVER SERIOUSLY INJURED. LORRY AND TRUCK COLLIDE. POLICE VEHICLE STRUCK. One man was killed and another injured seriously when the light motorlorry in which they were riding collided with the back of a heavy motor-truck parked outside tho Freeman's Bay police station, near the foot of Collego Hill, at 7.30 last evening. The victims were: — Killed. Mr. James Naughton, aged 37, married. of 49, College Hill. Injured. Mr. Alfred Best, aged 33, single, of 50, Cook Street, head injuries. Condition serious. The light lorry was travelling up College Hill, when it struck the back of the other vehiclo with terrific force. The front of the lorry was smashed beyond recognition, both Mr. Best, who was driving, and Mr. Naughton, who was seated bosido him, being rendered unconscious. They were taken in the St. John ambulance to the Auckland Hospital, where Mr. Naughton died about half an hour later.

The motor-truck with which the lorry collided was being used for the conveyance of special constables and was waiting outside the Freeman's Bay police station. Special constables who were in the station assisted to remove the injured men from tho wreckage. The impact was so severe that glass from the windscreen of the lorry was scattered over a distance of about 25yds. The truck was not damaged.
