SAVED FROM THE SURF.
RESCUE BY AUCKI-ANDER. INCIDENT ON SYDNEY BEACH. The rescue of a girl swimmer on Bondi Beach, Svduev, was performed recently by Mr. 11. Haines, of Auckland, who returned yesterday by the Ulimaroa from Sydney. Mr. Haines was walking along the beach in bis bathing suit, when he heard a cry for help and saw a young woman, Miss Sylvia Newlands, waving her arms in the surf. Although not a strong swimmer, Mr. Haines ran into the water, which at that point was shallow, but when about 20 yards from the distressed swimmer he found that the beach sloped away suddenly. lie plunged into tho surf and was "swept off bis feet by the strong current, biq after a severe struggle tie reached the girl and finally brought her ashore. Mr, Haines said (lie incident was not without an embarrassing sequel. Jt became rumoured that rescuer and rescued were 1o be. married, and denials met, only with scepticism. When Miss Newlands was about to leave for England by the, St rat bnaver she was presented with a " bridal" bouquet by one misinformed well-wisher, who was thoroughly convinced that she was leaving Sydney on a honeymoon trip.
