ASCENTS OF RUAPEHU.
SirWe feel indebted to Professor Parle for his illuminating letter published on March 24. It will lie of considerable assistance to us in compiling an accurate and authoritative list of the first ascents of Ruapehu. Apparently Mr. 11. Hill is incorrect in his statement as to the route followed by Messrs. Maxwell and Beetham in 1879, possibly being misled by assuming that the "great southern spur from the summit" referred to, is tho one running from the south peak instead of the one running from the northern peak, as Professor Park states. Messrs. Maxwell and Beetham reached the crater lip and discovered the Crater Lake, but apparently judging from tho account, proceeded no further, and did not climb any of the summit peaks, certainly not the northern one, Te Heu lieu. 'Perhaps Professor Park could state whether or not this was so. The Alpine Sports Club (Inc.)
