BRIGHTON HURDLES.
GOOD WIN FOR LUMINARY. PATUTAHI FINISHES SECOND. WILTSHIRE FAILS BADLY.
BY ARCHER,
The Brighton Hurdles provided an interesting finish and the honours fell to Luminary, who was fourth fancy at a good price. Luminary's stablemate, Lucess, was the actual favourite and bo flattered the hopes of his supporters when he challenged at the last fence, only to bo beaten into third place. The field raced in close order to the first fence, where Kinsel fell and Biform jumped to the front. Claremore then ran up to the leader and he took charge after going about half a mile. Claremore was still the leader passing the stands, where he was closely attended by Biform, who was followed by Patutahi and Luminary, with a gap of six lengths to Lucess, and then Cat-i-mes, Master Ln and Wiltshire, with Kairuri pulling up. Turning into the back stretch Claremore and Biform were together in the lead from Patutahi, Luminary, Lucess, Master Lu and Copey. Five furlonss from home Patutahi went to the lead and ho made play through the cutting from Biform and Luminary, who were together, with Claremore falling back and Lucess moving up. Patutahi gained a slight advantage nt the second to last fence and showed the way into the straight to Luminary, Biform, Claremore and Lucess. Patutahi was first over the last fence from Luminary, with Biform and Lucess coming on the outside. Luminary finished on well to win a good race by two lengths from Patutahi, who defeated Lucess by a neck. Biform was right up fourth, followed by Copey, Master Lu, Claremore, Cat-i-mes and Wiltshire. The winner was in his element on the easy track and ran right up to his best form. Patutahi displayed marked improvement upon his recent form, and Lucess ran a fine race. As he was not as well seasoned as the two who beat him. Lucess is tho more likely to improve and it should not be long before he is on the winning list again. Biform was far from well handled and if lie had been ridden as patiently as either Luminary or Lucess he would have gone very close to winning. Claremore went well while his condition lasted, but Wiltshire failed badly, never looking likely at any stage. Copey was running on at the end, and Master Lu just shaped fairly well. Kairuri pulled up after going seven furlongs, having injured himself in some way. Thurnline, dam of Luminary, was the prize in a half-crown raffle at Thames during the war years.
