The opening, of the Auckland Racing Autumn Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday provided a succession of surprises, with three first- dividends running into double figures and two for second falling only a little short. The weather, although overcast, was fine, and the track was in perfect condition, having been mellowed by the rain that had fallen in the preceding few days. Speedmint, winner of tl?e Great. Oaks, was the only successful favourite. The attendance was estimated at 14,000.
