CIVIL SERVICE SALARIES.
PROPOSED REDUCTION. 7£ PER CENT. MENTIONED. [Br TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Sunday. In view of the reply given by the Prime Minister to the Civil Service deputation during the week, speculation is rife regarding the prospects of a further cut in salaries. On the face of Mr. Forbes* statements, both cuts and retrenchment seem inevitable.
Many predictions are being made regarding tlie magnitude of further salary reductions in the service and although nothing definite has been decided as far as can be learned officially, there is a persistent impression that a cut of per cent, is under serious consideration.
