ENGINE DERAILED.
PARNELL TUNNEL ACCIDENT. NO SERIOUS DAMAGE. AXLE OF BOGEY WHEEL BREAKS. The engine drawing a suburban passenger train from Papakura was derailed in Tho Parnell tunnel about 11 o'clock on Saturday night, when the axle of a bogey wheel broke. No serious damage occurred as a result of the accident, and no interruption to traffic on the line was caused. Tho train, which left Papakura at 10.6, was travelling on time through th* tunnel and was not proceeding at a fast pace. The accident occurred some distance in- - sj(He the tunnel, and, had the engine been completely derailed while travelling rapidly, considerable damage probably would have been caused. Tho bogey wheels left tho line but the remainder of tho train was not affected. No difficulty was experienced in stopping the train within a short distance. The carriages were taken back to Newmarket after a little delay and small inconvenience was caused to the few passcri-
gers. As the train was the last to run on the line on Saturday evening and the tunnel would not be required for use during the week-end, it was not necessary to clear the line immediately, the engine being left in tho tunnel overnight. A breakdown train proceeded from the Auckland station to the scene about 7 a.m. yesterday, and tho front wheels of the engine were jacked back on to the rails. The engine was brought to Auckland for repairs, which are not expected to be extensive. The permanent way was not damaged and the tunnel will be available for traffic to-day.
