ART UNION PERMITS.
PROTEST AGAINST ISSUE. METHODIST CONFERENCE VIEW. [by telegraph.—PßESS ASSOCIATION-.] CHRISTC'HURCH. Sunday. The Methodist Conference yesterday carried a resolution protesting against the issue by the Government of art union p.ermitS in which valuable money prizes were offered. The protest was based on the ground that this method of raising funds, even for worthy objects, was highly cletrimental to the moral and economic interests of the Dominion and tended to foster gambling, " already a gigantic evil in the land." A resolution was also passed urging Methodists to continue their earnest opposition to the liquor traffic.
