FASHION IN GOLF BALLS.
CHANGE IN AMERICA. CONTROVERSY IN ENGLAND. An expert in golf-ball manufacture, Mr. T. 0. Heappey, of Birmingham, who is associated with the Dunlop-Ferdriau Rubber Company, is a through passenger for Melbourne by the Aorangi, which reached Auckland from Vancouver yesterday. "The question of a lighter or heavier golf ball is causing a controversy in golfing circles in England," said Mr. Heappey. "The idea of a larger and lighter golf ball is an American one, and is calculated to make the game more difficult. The new ball has been adopted by the United States Golf Association, so that it has official recognition in America. Whether it finds favour with all American golfers I cannot say. "In England the standard ball is still the small, heavy type, and the American lighter ball is not officially recognised. Some players prefer the new ball, and the companies make -a certain number for the'e peoplo. However, the great majority of golfers play with the standard ball. At the moment the British authorities are interested in, but not influenced by, the American departure." Mr. Heappey said it was possible that this new fashion in golf balls might have a, disconcerting effect upon players in international contests. However, as far as the. Ryder Cup contests Avere concerned, the leading British players had had experience with the new ball. It would be better if some finality was reached in the matter.
