EPSOM TRACK-WORK.

USEFUL TASKS ON CINDERS.

POI'S SOUND SADDLE EFFORT. ROYAL TRIUMPH TROTS WELL. Tlie cinder (rack nt Epsom was opened before breakfast yesterday morning, and n number of horses were given useful tasks. Tho footing was reasonably good, but not fast. Several trainers used the sand track, while a few were content to give their charges jogging exercise on the centre of the course. Round displays were given by Te Wnliia, Prince Pedro, Royal Triumph, Poi, Winshow, Lucky Voyage, Prince Etawall,' Nathaniel. Mountain Doll and Kolmar. Poi went pleasingly in saddle, and Royal Triumph showed a good deal of dash while sprinting a couple of quarters. Poi (P. Adlam). in saddle, and Winshow (A. J. Corrigan), after warming np over a few laps, hopped away for a mile task. The paco was moderate for the first, half, but improved vastly, Poi, who finished slightly in front, registering 1.10 for the final half. Poi, who did her work in resolute style, will he ridden in her engagements by Adlam. Before joining the Corrigan stable Adlam was associated with gallopers. Winshow paced very nicely and looks a useful sort for country meetings.

Royal Triumph (R. A. McMillan) trotted at an easy clip over several laps and then set out on a mile and a-half task. Ho was not hurried in the early stages, but. hit out boldly over the last mile, which was. run in 2.25. Royal Triumph gave a sound display throughout, and maintained an even gait for the mile, each half showing 1.125. Te Wahia (P. Mullan) and Prince Pedro (R. A. McMillan) were associated in a useful work-out over a mile and a-Quarter in 2.57. Te Wahia led to the six furlongs iu 1.45. where Prince Pedro moved up, and they travelled fast to the home turn to* gether. In the run home Te Wahia held the advantage, and copld have done better than the 1.9 recorded for the final half. Te Wahia. whose mission to-day will be the Moss Davis Handicap, is in fine form. Prince Pedro again demonstrated that he is not lacking in speed qualities. Mazda on the Improve. Lucky Voyage (A. J. Corrigan) trotted without mistake for four circuits, but was not fully extended. He showed himself to be a solid trotter. Mazda. (A. Willetts) paced nicely for three bps without the straps. Allowed to step along in the straight, she put a lot of dash into her work, and is on the improve again. Nathaniel (A. Willetts), assisted byOliver Thorpe, who galloped most of the way. covered a mile and a-half at a useful clip, travelling the final circuit at a 2.25 gait. Nathaniel, who has Btood up (o his work well since being recommissioned, will race on Wednesday. Marble Star (A. Millen) and Grand Triumph (R. Barrett) trotted steadily over several laps, but the former was alwnys going easily. Grand Triumph is making good progress for a novice trotter, and should find races on the country circuit to suit him Prince Etawah (R. A. Shepherd) was not exerted while running a mile, but stepping along an extra half covered the distance in 1.32. If the track is heavy to-day Prince Etawah will be driven in the Waiheke Handicap by L. Lnver, and with the lightweight should have a good chance of success Worthy Caitfe (L. Laver) paced stylishly over two kps free-legged, and appeared anxious to increase the speed. A. <T. Julian's maiden is in splendid order. He is one of the smartest beginners among the novices, a valuable asset in a large field. Roi Grande (A. T. Ne'wdick) gave a mixed exhibition of. trotting while travelling over a mile and a-half. On the straight he showed 6ome ■fcpeed, but left his feet on each bend. Impromptu (C. Lowe) was galloped several laps and relished hi 3 task.- Impromptu is in splendid heart, but it will derend on the state of the track whether he starts in the Otahuhu Handicap to-day. Mountain Dell's Form. On the sand track Mountain Dell (C. G. Lee) gave a bold display of free-legged pacing, and showed keenness for her work. Mountain Dell is in better form than when last seen in public, and with tho sting out of the ground she should race prominently. Kolmar (A. W. Broughton) and Win Huon (C. G. Lee) were associated in a sound effort on the same track. Both trotted steadily, Kolmar in particular hitting out in fine style. In addition to driving Kolmar. Broughton will be behind Benefice in the Moss Davis Handicap, and will have the mount on Satin Bird in the saddle race. Our Peter (N. Vernall) was allotted steady free-legged work in saddle. He looks a picture, and will lack nothing on the score of condition. C». Mitchell's horses, First Flight. Enawah and Eleawah were restricted to jogging exercise. Eleawah has furnished into a neatlooking mare, and if she has improved in barrier manners should be troublesome in the Waiheke Handicap. Enawah's prospects in the Otahuhu Handicap will be enhanced by tho easy track. Gold Treasure was exerciser! on the lead in the centre of the track. With the prospect of a soft track ho line conic well into favour for the Otahuhu Handicap to-day. With the footing to his liking ho may be one of tho hardest for Auto Machine to beat. A. Brown was rontent to give Auto Machine strong unhoppled pacing work on the cii:ders. The Otahuhu Handicap favourite revelled in his work. and was anxious to increase the pace. No fault can be found with his condition. On Saturday afternoon L. F. Berkett worked hi 3 team on the cinders. Raydushit out in very solid style, and made a good impression while traversing three lanf. He i? a good type of horse, who should not. be hampered by soft tracks. Travis also pleased bv bis easy style of pacing, and this season he lias furnished into a eolidlooking horse. Todd Bingen was not asked a serious question, but. he is in good orde*Explosion put in an appearance at E"?om on ami yeelcHiy. beini allotted wrlking exercise. While stil 1 favouring his injured leg. lie has made a good recovery, and while he v ill not be a competitor i-i the February Handicap today. W. Clif'oy has hopes of being able (•» give him a rut in the Rangitoto Han dicap on Wednesday
