CHARGE OF ESCAPING. FURTHER REMAND GRANTED. A further remand until February 26 was granted by Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, in the case of Roy George Cudby, aged 28, charged with being a. rogue and vagabond in that he escaped from lawful custody on February 2. Cudby is the prisoner who- was an inmate in the Auckland Hospital. A fruit farmer, Donald Edwin Sharp, aged 23, appeared on a, charge of incurring a debt of £7 14s 6d with a rental car firm, thereby obtaining credit by fraud. The accused pleaded not guilty, but admitted the facts. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said Sharp had hired the vehicle for three hours up to 7 p.m. on February 15. The car had not been returned that evening, tho accused taking a companion to Thames. A journey of 400 miles was made during the four days the vehicle was away, the cost, including that of a certain amount ,of damage, being estimated at £7 14s 6d. Counsel said Sharp was prepared to pay the account if allowed time. The magistrate convicted Sharp, ordering him to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
