SPEED ON WATER.
GAR WOOD'S PERFORMANCE. CLAIM TO RECORD REFUSED. (Received February 7, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YCK'K, Feb. fi. At Miami Beach, Florida, yesterday Mr. Gar Wood claimed the new world speed-boat record on a two-way averago 6|>'eed of 111.712 miles an hour. Miss America IX. attained a speed of 112.734 miles an hour on the southward run on the Indian Creek course over a nautical mile, and 110.083 miles an hour tin the return run. The elapsed time southward was 36.07 seconds and northward 37.35 seconds, ami the average speed, worked out on statute miles speed, ■was 1.489 miles an hour faster than Mr. ]\uve Don's speed at Lake Uarda, Italy, ,last July; . Mr. Wood said that changes in the hull and the installation of superchargers had giVen his craft the higher speed. The time is not to be accepted as a new United States record because the run was not sanctioned by the United States Power-boat Association.
