BOUNDARY ROADS.
UNSATISFACTORY POSITION. CITY COUNCIL'S DIFFICULTY. A very unsatisfactory arrangement under which certain of tho boundary roads of the city arc controlled was revealed at the meeting of tho City Council last evening, when a letter was received from a ratepayer asking that some work of a permanent nature be carried out on Selwyn Road, which is one of the boundary roads between the city and the M ount Roskill road district.
ll was pointed out by the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, that plans had been prepared for carrying out permanent works on these roads at a cost of £2540, of which Mount Roskill's share would be £1270. Tho Road Board, however, had stated that it was unable to find its share of the cost and had referred to an agreement under which the council could do the work and collect its share from the board.
The engineer explained that this agreement was entered into in 1918, when it was agreed that the City Council should assume control of portions of Landscape, fc>l. Andrew's and Selwyn Roads and The Drive and carry out work there to the extent of £l5O a year. Notice was to be given if the amount to be spent would exceed £l5O a year, and, upon the board objecting, the council was to abandon the work until the matter had been referred to arbitration. This was most unsatisfactory, SRid the engineer, as the roads were badly in need of improvement. Jt. was unfair to city ratepayers that no relief could be afforded them, although loan money was available.
The request- was referred to the Works Committee for a report.
