RAWLINGS SCHOLARSHIPS.
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES. THREE AUCKLAND CITY BOYS. The successful candidal es for three scholarships under the will of the late Mr. Humphrey Rawlings have been announced by the trustees, Messrs. C. C. Baker and L. W. Swan. They are:— John Allison Whelan, son of Mrs. R. M. Whelan, of 3, Mangawhau Road, Newmarket, and a pupil of the Newmarket primary school, 165 marks out of a possible of 250, 1; David Owen Waters, son of Mr. W. L. Waters, of 4, Tudor Street, Devonport, and a pupil of tho Devonpor primary school, 163, 2; and Thomas Thexton, son of Mr. C. Thexton, of 20, Cromwell Road, Mount. Eden, and a pupil of Kowhai Junior High School, 153, 3, The scholarships are tenable for three years at either King's College or one of the Grammar Schools, and entitle the holders to a maintenance allowance of £lO a year each. It. has been decided that Whelan will attend the Auckland Grammar School and Waters the Takapuna Grammar School. Eighty-one of tho original 87 candidates, representing about 25 primary schools of the Auckland Province, sat for the examination, which was conducted by tho Rev. F. W. Young. No scholarship is awarded unloss there are at, least 20 candidates, representative of at least five schools. There aro still nine boys holding Rawlings scholarships, three having relinquished theirs at the end of last year. The number awarded each year has no fixed limit, but is regulated by tho funds available.
