LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFEAT OF MISS RAMSAY. E. \V. GRIFFITHS ELIMINATED. GoCicl progress was made with Iho Auckland provincial lawn tennis championships at the Stanley Street courts yesterday. In the men's singles the last came into line, notable defeats being E. W. Griffiths by A. K. Turner and S. Lamb by R. W. Milne. In the early singes' Griffiths had Turner on the imi, but the Eden and Epsom player's rrtiieving was remarkable and he ,saved himself time and again from apparently hopeless positions. Griffiths tired in the closing stages, and Turner, maintaining the aggressive, won a well-merited victory. Partridge went in to attack Laurenson and was rewarded with the third set, but, like so many others before him, beat himself in vain against the rock-like defence of the title-holder. The match, however, was close and Partridge deserves credit for a well-played game. Milne put up his best performance to dates in defeating Lamb after being two set j. down. Milne not only retrieved splendidly, but took the net position with determination and judgment. S. J. Robinson did well to secure the third set from Bartleef, while Rowlands proved 100 steady for V. R. Johns and won in straight sets. M. M. Morrison was not threatened by Porter and Sturt did much as lie liked with P. *E. Potter. J. Harrison showed only glimpses of his previous day's form and was hard pressed to defeat Aldred at 6—3 in the fifth set. It- was not enterprising tennis, and, although there were some bright spots, there wore many unaccountable weak ones. The ladies' singles has been reduced to four players, Mrs. Melody, Miss B. Knight, Miss Marjorie Macfarlane and Mrs. Napier. Miss Knight beat Miss Robe-iton in straight sets. Miss Roberton scored frequently with backhand placements to Miss Knight's backhand corner, but appeared to become rather reckless and made too many errors. The Reniuera piaver's forehand was not used frequently enough, and her service was unimpressive. Mrs. Napier provided possibly the biggest surprise to date by defeating Miss Ramsay, whose falling-off seemed almost unaccountable. However, Mrs. Napier deserves credit for the way she handled her opponent's heavily charged chop shots. Mrs. Melody played brilliantly to defeat Miss Potter in a well-contested match, which was much closer than the score indicates. Miss Potter never let up and there were many clever placements by bot h players. Miss Marjorie Macfarlane held the upper hand through two sets against Miss Miller. The last-named, although defeated, played well and has every reason to he satisfied with her showing. Eight pairs remain in the men's doubles and the ultimate winners are difficult to pick. Laurenson and Bartleet had a hard-hitting five-set contest with Charters and Robinson, which pleased the spectators, but the play lacked finesse, with the possible exception of that of Charters. In the deciding set Bartleet and Laurenson improved considerably and were not threatened. The only pair through to the semi-final round of the ladies' doubles is Mrs. Melody and Miss P. Miller, who dropped but one game to Misses Anderson and Gardnei'. J. C. Charters and Miss Ruth Taylor both played excellently to defeat V. R. Johns and Miss B. Knight. Miss Taylor drove splendidly, while Charters' volleying was clever and effective. E. W. Griffiths and Miss Betty Griffiths did well to score oyer Hayr and Miss Ramsay. Griffiths out-generalled Hayr and received steady support from his partner. Following are the results: — MEN'S SINGLES.—A GRADE. Second Hound.—-Laurenson beat Partridse. 9 —7, 6—3, 4—6.
