MINES ON SHORT TIME.
POSITION AT HIKURANGI. WEEK'S ORDERS FULFILLED. [BY TELEGRAPH.: —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Thursday. The Hikurangi Coal Company's mine at Hikurangi is working short time on account' of a shortage of orders. The mine is idle from midnight last night until midnight to-night. Unless orders increase, it is not expected that the mine will work more frequently than three days a week. As it is necessary to keep the pumps going seven days a week, the expenses of production of coal with the reduced output is a serious matter to the company. The present outlook is not promising and there is no indication of an increased demand for coal. Wilsons' co-operative mine at Hikurangi was also idle to-day, as the present week'i order has been fulfilled. Storing facilitiee are not provided at either mine.
