THE MILFORD HOSTEL.
ELIMINATING THE LOSS. PRIVATE ENTERPRISE URGED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —r-RESS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCARGILL, Thursday. Kecent negotiations between tho Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, the Southland League, and the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister in charge of Tourist Resorts, concerning the cost of maintaining the Milford and To Anau tourist resort were discussed at a meeting of tho executive of the Southland League this evening. The Chamber of Commerce forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Minister, outlining the capital and maintenance costs and revenue, but it was decided not to rej»nse this information for publication. Mr. John Gilkison, representing the Chamber of Commerce, said ho held strongly that the management of the hostel and associated undertakings should not bo left in tho hands of (ho Government. Ho believed the Government should invite tenders for private enterprise to take over the undertaking with a view to it being put on a firm footing and as much as possible of tho loss eliminated. The president of tho league, Mr. W. Hinchey, said he appreciated the view of the chamber, but ho felt it was regrettable that the matter had been dealt with in such a way. He would agree with Mr. Gilkison that private enterprise should take up the undertaking and endeavour to make a success of it. Mr. Gilkison took a very gloomy view of the position. Mr. Gilkison replied that ho advocated that the concern should be livened up and made successful. It was decided to appoint a sub-com-mittee to confer with the Chamber of Commerce.
