WHANGAREI.

The first anniversary of the Whangaret Harmonic Orchestra was celebrated hv a plain and fancy dress dance. Among those present were:—Mesdames Da vies, L. Davies, Atkinson, O Shea. Misses Davies, Jennings, Swanson. Henderson. J. Curtis, F. Curtis, Brewis, Cyprian, Yaile, Spider. Underwood. G. Underwood, Black. Fiice, Marlow. Collier. Farewell Gathering. A most enjoyable function was that recently held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Clarke, of Maunu. Whangarei, when over 40 relatives and friends met to express hearty good wishes to Miss Audrey Mr-Carroll cn her approaching marriage. The guest of honour, who is the second daughter of Colonel and Mrs. J. N. McCarroll. of Maunu. was the recipient of many useful and charming gifts. Colonel .7. X. McCarroll, on behalf of his daughter, expressed appreciation for the many expressions of goodwill. In the dining room ping-pong was played, while many engaged in the drawing room and on the verandah in an amusing competition. Tlie ladies' prize was won by Mrs. McCarroll and the men's by Mr. Mowbray. Progressive tennis was also played, the prize-winners being Miss Joan Clarke and Mr. Gilbert. Afternoon tea concluded a most enjoyable function. Institute Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Maunu (Whangarei) Women's Institute was held at tlie residence of Mrs. 11. E. Armstrong. The chief business was the discussion of remits forwarded by various institutes throughout the Dominion for consideration at the annual conference. The institute's delegate. Miss Millington. was instructed how to act in connection with the various remits. Mrs. Allen, of Whangarei. gave a very interesting address on "Home Nursing" and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea and community singing concluded a successful gathering.
