QUEEN STREET TRAM POLES.
REMOVAL TO BEGIN SHORTLY. BUILDINGS TO SUPPORT WIRES. Removal of the tramway centre poles in Queen Street from Customs Street to Wellesley Street will shortly be put in hand by the Transport Board, whose officials are now completing agreements with property owners along the route for the suspension of the overhead gear from suitable buildings. The board's engineer, Mr. F. E. de Guerrier, said yesterday that 16 poles will be removed. It was not intended to take out the massive poles at the Customs Street and Wellesley Street intersections on account of the complicated problems involved in arranging for the support of the wires at those points. Removal of the poles at the intersections would necessitate their substitution by four large poles at each corner of the intersection, or in all, eight poles in place oE the two now existing. It is expected that the agreements with the owners of the 32 buildings concerned will be finalised within a fortnight and removal of the poles can then begin.
