W hen returning from gathering firewood on the reclamation at Thorndon this afternoon, Mr. Ernest William Dockrell, a waterside worker, aged about 38, slipped and was subsequently found dead in the mud. Dockrell and a companion were taking a short cut homeward across the reclamation shortly after four o'clock. The circumstances of the mishap have not yet been ascertained definitely, but it is understood that Dockrell's companion, who had preceded him across the reclaimed land, found a soft patch and he became bogged. Dockrell managed to teach a culvert and it is believed that his boots were made slippery by tho passage across the mud and he slid on the hard surface and was thrown down. Looking across, his companion,, who was still in the mud, saw Dockrell flat on his face and he called for help. Passers-by heard the calls and came to his assist ance. They dragged him out of the mud and then went across to Dockrell, but they found that he was dead.
