VICE-REGAL BALL.

MANY DEBUTANTES. Government House in Wellington was a very bright and cheerful plac9 on Thursday evening, when 'lVieir Excellencies the Governor-General and the Lady Bledisloe held a delight fid ball. The ballroom was arranged with groups of cyclamen and delicately-tinted ferns near the dais where Their Excellencies received the debutantes and those who presented them, while round the dais itself were lovely cinerarias, lnpigeria and nemesias, mingled with foliage plants and ferns. Bamboo was used freely, and iu the loggia there were more groups, with many flowering plants, while electric lamps, pink-shaded, were interspersed, making a charming ensemble. The supper was set in the billiard and dining rooms, and in the entrance hall (which was warmly curtained), the tables being centiod with handsome silver pi'esentation epergnes, which held crystal bowls filled with large trumpet daffodils, smaller crystal vases having violets and primroses. In the drawing room were some line sprays of New Zealand's most beautiful bush flower, yellow kowhai, as well as many daffodils, freesias, violets, and a delightful jardiniere of anemones and ferns.

Their Excellencies had introduced into tho programme two polkas, one of which was to the formerly well-known old tune, "See Me Dance the Polka," which interested and amused the older guests immensely. The Lady Beldisloe wore a frock of pink pearl-tinted chiffon, embroidered all over with crystal and pearl paillettes; the corsage was cut below the waist into leaf design, from which fell a voluminous tulle skirt. Her ornaments were a rope of pearls and a diamond tiara, and she carried an ostrich feather fan in natural tints.

The house party included Lady Norah Jellicoe, who was in parchment-shaded soft satin; Mrs. Cecil Day, deep scarlet lace over satin, and a long tulle scarf to tone. Miss Betty Brocklehurst (Napier) pale green taffeta, and Miss R. Pharazyn (Hawke's Bay), orchid mauve taffeta and net.

A large number of debutantes were presented. They included Miss Ansell, Miss Marjorie Ardell, Miss Anne Blakiston (Dannevirke), Miss Noela Cable, Miss Noeline Cramond, Miss Dorothy Clark, Miss Evelyn Grant-Dalton, Miss Gwyneth Frazer, Miss Mary Knox-Gilmer, Miss Pamela Fell (Nelson), Miss Nancy Heinemann. Miss Joan Hodgkins, Miss Phyllis Kerruish, Miss Marie Rissel, Miss Zoe La Trobe, Miss Clair Longmore, Miss Betty Manton, Miss Patricia Marshall, Miss Elza Martin, Miss Ola Moslers, Miss Joy Nicholls.
