OFFENCES BY SEAMAN. MAGISTRATE GRANTS PROBATION Three charges of theft of goods. and money were admitted by James Anthony Lynch, aged 27, seaman, in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hnnt, S.M. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused was staying at the house of a friend in Ponsonby and on May 19 he stole £4 in money from a purse he found lying on a table. He then left the house and did not return. He was later staying at another house, from which he stole a suitcase and clothing valued at £lB on August 14, while on the following day he stole a shirt and a razor, worth £1 15s. At the time of his arrest he had a good position in the country and might be able to make restitution. Accused's employer said ho had been working well but drink seemed to be his trouble. "Witness would, however, take him back again. '"I will give him a chance," said the magistrate, in admitting accused to probation for 12 months. Accused was instructed to take out a prohibition order and was also ordered to make restitution of £6 ss.
