Tlio institution in [March last year ol: the system of monthly telephone rentals is: mentioned by the Post and Telegraph Department in its annual report to have been helpful in enabling new business to bo secured. The report states there was; little doubt that this arrangement popularised the telephone and brought it. within the reach of many who previously considered it to be beyond their means. The commercial branch had been instrumental not only in securing new subscribers, but also' in retaining a number of old subscribers who had notified their intention of relinquishing their telephones. 1 The report also states that as a measure of economy it has been decided to issue telephone directories yearly instead of every six mouths. It is estimated'that, a saving of between £SOOO and £6OOO per annum will result from this alteration. Under the new arrangement, lists of additions and other amendments to the directories 'will bo issued to subscribers six months after each directory is distributed.
