Tlio capital loss to lite Post anjJ Telegraph Department as a result of the Hawke's Bay earthquake is estimated at not less thi.n £175,000, according to the annual report of the department. The capital value of telegraph and telephone equipment destroyed is estimated at £52,000. while the cost, of restoration will ' in nil probability reach £25,000. The cost of reconditioning the Napier chief i post office, replacing the damaged portion of the Hastings building, erecting a ' new post office at Port Ahuriri, and re- I pairing the damage to other buildings is ' estimated at £.50,000. 1 It was fortunate, states the report, that the cost ol renewing and replacing damaged property and equipment could bo provided out of the depreciation reserve fund established under the Post 1 and Telegraph Act, I£'27. ]
