RUNAWAY TAXICAB.
CRASH INTO A HOUSE.
DRIVER'S LUCKY ESCAPE.
A taxicab which was parked at the side of Reudall Place, a steep street leading into Archhill Gully from the New North Road, began moving as the driver was cranking the engine yesterday morning, and after knocking the man down, raced down the street and crashed into a house on the other side.
The occupier of the house, Mr. T. Laird, and his family, thought that an earthquake had occurred. When they went to the front they found a car half-way up the steps. Only a tree growing near the verandah bad stopped it from' causing further damage. Several yards of the fence were levelled and the front axle of the car was bent. After a wrecking crane had replaced it on the road, the car was able to proceed under its own power. The driver of the car suffered only slight injuries to one foot, which had been run over by u wheel. Had the front wheels not been turned so that the car made a semi-circle and crossed the road, it would have crashed over a high bank at the foot of the hill..
The steep streets running into the-Arch-hill Gully have been the scene of several similar accidents recently, one in KingsIjand Avenue in March having caused the death of two persons.
