TRAINING AT AWAPUNI.

CLASSIC CANDIDATES.

KING COLOSSUS' PROGRESS.

AVONDALE TRIP IN VIEW. [from our own correspondent.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday. "With tlie spring fixtures coming nearer there was an air of activity at Awapuni this morning. Fast workers had the use of the outside of the course proper, the going being slightly holding. G. W. New worked some of his team before breakfast. Last year's Avondale Stakes winner. King Colossus, who has developed into a fine three-year-old. ran seven furlongs in attractive style. He will .compete in the Wangunui Guineas before going north for, the Avondale Guineas. Sastrugi. a small but stylish two-year-old by Lord Quex from Icebnll, will represent New in this year's 'Avondale Stakes; arid the trainer has hopes that ho will be able to repeat lue.- victory of last year. In company with Merry Hunter, Sastrugi ran three furlongs in 425, and although the former held the advantage, it was no mean effort on the part of the two-year-old. Merry Damon, who has been kept jogging along since his victory on the second day of the Manawatu winter meeting, will accompany King Colossus and Sastrugi on the Auckland trip. Llandudno Much Improved. Llandudno (Mellis), who is looking vastly improved, Lad Seneschal (L. Gray) as hj, partner over half a mile, running the distance in 555, after taking .15s for the first furlong. , Spearmiss (Mollis) finished full of running ut the close of seven furlongs with Royal Black in 1.40. Sporting Chance (McDowell) and Tegucigalpa (Boyd) jumped away at the six furlongs post to run the last five furlongs in 1.11 1-5. They ran from the three to the five in 27 3-5, but were eased iiii in the straight. A. Wea.thej"vane Filly and a Gasbag geld iug from Mrs. McDonald's stable had Celeste (Sky Blue- Sartosf a) as a-companion over half a mile in 575. While the Weathervane filly finished ■ best, it was Celeste's first gallop in company. Broxt (f'hisholm) and Potonform (Blanche) ran six furlpngs in 1.26 2,-5. They were to have • picked up Brown Abbey, but he wont off too soon and was not caught. ■lean Lndosio recorded a very satisfactory effort when she ran the last three of four furlongs in 41a. Trojan Melody (Broughton), from a standing start, strode over six furlongs in 1.30 2-5, after doing tho first tjiree in 41s. La Poupso Works Well. While not required to give of her best., La Poupee (Shearman) hit' out. very freely over six furlongs. The filly covered the first three furlongs in 45s and tho last three in 43 2-ss. Chief Cook and Teller carried out a useful task, while Chief Line and Chief Clerk were restricted to light work. These four three-year-olds all look well and in good order for the spring racing. Owing to Mrs. McDonald working uor two-year-olds in the afternoons, little has been seen of them for some time. The trainer has hopes of being able to present the best two-vear.old locally once again this season and the Paper Money—Fleeting youngster is picked as the likely one. 1 lie full-brother to' Gay Ballerina is also a good Star Girl. (.Chry.stali) and Gambler (A. E. Stratton) set out to do a round of the hurdles, but Star Girl lost her pilot at tho first fence. She was remounted and although she did not fence too %voll fit tho second, she improved ns she advanced, btar Girl is to compete at the Tarnnnlu Hunt fixture. Blue Paper's Good Jumping. .

Another Taranaki Hunt candidate, I'.vcuing Hero (Miles) and Desert Lad (Chrystall) went a round of'tho hurdles and gave a good display. ... , -nrGueress (Blancho) and the hunter Winnigan (Miles) did a round and a-halt oyer country, the former giving a promising display. Winnignn ran off at tho second of the brush double each time, an injure" arm preventing Miles from, avoiding tins happening. Otherwise Winmgan s disPl Bhie a Pa^ o e°r d '(Bell) gave a faultless display over a couple of rounds of the liurdles. The Paper Money filly has bad little experience, yet she fenced with power and case. __ WANGANUI HORSES. W. RAYNER'S JUVENILES. PREPARATION OF IMPETUOUS. [from our own correspondent. 1 WANGANUI, Saturday. The approach of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting has led to more activity on tho Wanganui tracks, and this morning several trainers sent their charges along for short sprints. Number one trackwas used for fast work and it lind rolled out well, although still a trifle dead. W. Rayner sent Impetuous and the two-year-old Linoleum from tho four-furlongs post in company with Takahue,. from C. Gordon's stable. After running two in 25s Linoleum was eased up, and the others continued oilj registering a shade tinder 04b for the half-mile. They were not under pressure at the finish. Impetuous is not being hurried in her preparation and it will not be surprising if she is kept until the late spring meetings before being asked to do anything serious. Linoleum is not very forward and ho. too., may not be seen at his .best this 6ide of Christmas, perhaps not until Easter. A patient policy is being pursued with him Takahue looks a likely sort for a minor hack event in the spring. Psychologist and Pedestal. The Guineas candidate Psychologist was accompanied by .Pedestal over [our furlongs iii 52 1-Ss. As Pedestal, who moved ulong freely, wiis comfortably holding his own at the end when Psychologist appeared to be rolling a bit, the gallop was not as impressive' as. could have been desired for a horse engaged in the Guineas. ' Pomp and Callan ran half a mile in 525. Callan is smart over a sprint distance, but at the finish Pomp had it on her. Pomp has built' lip considerably since hist season and appears 'to be well conditioned. nidgemount. ran along well at little better than three-quarter pace on the outside of the "track. The trainer, W. .11, Dwyer. has 'plenty of condition to work on in Ridgemount's preparation, and prospects arc that he will be able to ; place 'him to advuntago before the season is far advanced. ijwjrer -bas fflso brought in Pnratoo after ii spell n' close on five months, and tho Grapdcouvt gelding appears' to have reaped the full benefit -of his sojourn on his owner's farm. lie is bigger than ever and should develop into a useful horse. Prospects of Knollmere. Knollmere does not show any ill-effects from his two efforts at Riccarton. Ho should do well in the spring. Arisus ran four furlongs in a tick under 545. He blew a good deal and is not likely to race for a couple of months. Rayner's other juveniles Midinette and Genesta were given useful pace-work and are not being hurried, although it is probable that Midinette, the Limond-Motley filly, will contest- the early two-year-old events if she goes on in the right way. Fernden and Korokio wore given useful exercise, tho former working well on the plough. Psychologist goes to New Plymouth for the Taranaki Hunt meeting next Saturday.

COUNTRY RACING CLUBS.

QUESTION OF AMALGAMATION.

A special meeting of the Auckland Provincial Country Racing Clubs' Association, held' in Auckland during the week-end, was attended by delegates from the following clups : Bay of Islands Racing Club, Whangarei Racing Club. Franklin Racing Club, Waikalo Racing Club, Waipa Racing Club, To Kuiti Racing Club, : Taumarunui Racing Club, Thames Jockey Club. Matamn In, Racing Club, Rotorua Racing Club,. Bay of Plenty Jockey . Club and Opotiki Jocltey Club. . The prevailing economic conditions nnd the position of country clubs wdre disenssed and it was generally considered that some measure of relief must be obtained to make it possible for many of the clubs to carry on successfully. , , A' number of suggestions were made for cutting down expenses and endeavouring to obtain some reduction or remission in taxation, and it was decided that concerted action should be taken with a view to bringing about better conditions for racing in the country districts and reducing the- present heavy charges. Suggestions concerning the amalgamation of certain cltibs and the centralisation of racing in country districts were also discussed, but no definite decision was reached.
