NOTES ON THE RACING.

FAILURE OF TOWN BEAUTY.

LAND MEASURE'S HURDLES. BIDDY'S BOY WINS WELL. Only six started in the Greenmotmt Hunters' Steeplechase and Town < Beauty was installed an odds-on- favourite, nearly three times as well supported as the second favourite, St. Lucas. Town Beauty made most of tho running from Lenaubin and St. Lucas and he was going particularly well in front when he fell at the first fence on the hill in the second round. Lenaubin wna then left in charge, but was soon challenged by St. Lucas, who came on to beat him by six lengths. Mountain Lava, the only other to finish, was two furlongs away third and had not reached the last fence when the first two were pulling up. Tt looked ns if Town Beauty would have won comfortably with a stand-up. Clontnrf Bill and Trampas fell in the first round. Undismayed by the failure of Town Beauty in the first race, investors made To Homai an odds-on favourite over Pennyplain for the Harris Memorial Hurdles, but lie had to lower his colours to Land Measure, who was always in front over the last mile. Gay Cavalier fell at the first fence and then Ruby Dawn, who was leading, did likewise at the second fence, loaving Land, Measure in,. command from Te Homai, Pennyplain and General Lu. Four furlongs from home Te Bomai ard Pennyplain began to close on Land Measure, who u'as several lengths clear. Lund Measure, however, was going too well ard she went away again in the straight to beat Te Homai by five lengths. Pennyplain was another five lengths away third ard General Lu was fourth. Next came Night Comet and Jiu Jazz. Land Measure is an improved mare and stayed on much better than usual. Te Homai battled on gamely under pressure and he will be better suited by longer distances. Pennyplain, who broke away from his rider and careered up through the middle of the course before the race, made a fine showing and wss almost with the winner at the last fence., when his condition gave out. Consistent' Valueless. A good'finish in the Sylvia Park Handicap saw Valueless, & good second favourite, win nicely from Emancipation. Full \!';asure and Muskon were slow to begin, Valuuless jumping away first ahead of Amb'sr Link and Exaggeration. With two furlongs covered Valueless was steadied, Exaggeration and Amber Link going on in the lead to show the way into the straight to L'Allegro, Ganpat, Valueless, Red Lion and Kingsway. Once into the straight Valueless shot through and ho stalled off Emancipation to win by two lengths. Ganpat was two and a-half lengths away third and Catck'em was fourth. Then followed L'Allegro, Karangapai and Exaggeration. Valueless has now won three on end and he will win in better company. Emancipation finished on well and Ganpat was always well up, only to weaken near the post. Catch'em came home strongly and Karangapai ran a very nice race. Red Lion, the favourite, did not jump out well and after running up at the turn gave no trouble at the finish.

The Gisborno representative Malaliat, at double-figure odds, was responsible for a surprise in winning the Jellicoo Handicap, for which Te Hoia and Gay Cockade were the favourites. Once the field had settled down Gay Cockade was in command from Catoma, Prince of Orunge, Flying Prince, Malabat and Prince Val. Standfast ran up third at the half-mile, otherwise there was very little change until they carao into the straight. The field then bunched and Malahat 6hot out inside the distance to win by three-parts of a length from Catoma. Gay Cockade was a neck away third and Prince of Orange was fourth. Then in a bunch came Te Hoia, Flying Prince and Prince Val. Malahat was nicety ridden by H. N. Wiggins and stayed on splendidly. Catoma, Gay Cockade, Te Hoia and Prince of Orange all ran good races, Te Hoia just weakening near the poßt after making a fine run on the outside. Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Yet another favourite was defeated when Billy Boy was comfortably beaten by Nukutere in the Pakuranga, Hunt Cup. A good pace was set in the first round, when Royal Visitor and Billy Boy had turns in the lead and when they went along the back the second time Royal Visitor, ajid .Billy Boy were just leading Nukutere, King's Counsel and St. Lucas, with the others well back. Royal Visitor stood off too far and unseated his rider at the fence by the fivefurlongs post, leaving Billy Boy in charge. Nukutere headed Billy Boy coming down the incline and from then on held the upper hand to win by two and a-half lengths. King's Counsel was 20 lengths away third and St. Lucas was fourth, the others being badly beaten. The first and second horses both fenced splendidly and Nukutere stayed on the better under his light weight. Royal Visitor was going well when he lost tis rider and would have made the finish ?ery interesting if he had etood up. Investors were right on the spot in the Auckland Handicap when the favourites Taurua, "Wild Country and Grand Spirit filled the places in the order in which they were supported. Sports King and Prntomint lost ground at the start, Wild Country being first away only to lose her position along the back, where Taurua and Union ran to the lead from Grand Spirit. Excella Tea and Lady Musk. There was little change as they came into the straight and Taurua stalled off a challenge from Wild Country to score by half a length. Grand Spirit was two lengths away third and Union was fourth, next' coming Lady Musk and Excella Tea. Taurua began better than usual from the walk-in < start and hung on well at the finish. Wild Country was unlucky, for she struck trouble early and there was only one behind her at the half-milo. Dominican Scores Well. Nicely ridden by Mr. -J. F. Morris. Dominican, the favourite, scored a comfortable victory in the Ladies' Bracelet. Ruby Dawn set a solid pace and was soon four lengths clear of Little Wonder, wi,th the, others strung out. Four furlongs from home Dominican commenced to move up and he came along with a strong run in the straight to win by three lengths from Little Wonder, who defeated Ruby Dawn by a neck. Royal Visitor was fourth apd Gay Cavalier fifth. It was a weak field and Dominican finished too strongly for the others.. • .. Showing great speed from ]So. 11 position at the barrier. Biddy's Boy rusherl to the front in tho first furlong in the Dunedin Handicap and was never afterwards headed. High Comedy and Baroscope were smartest to move and then Biddy's Boy dashed to tho lead to come into the straight clear of Tea Chat. High Comedy, Royal Artist and Baroscope. Biddy's Boy hung on well at the finish and scored by three-parts of a length .from "lioyal Artist, who defeated Taneriri by half a length. High Comedy was fourth, followed by Valroe, Bennie, Baroscope and Jalldy Karo. , Biddy's Boy galloped in great style and should be a high-class sprinter this season. Royal Artist, High Comedy and Tanoriri all ran solid races, Taneriri finishing on remarkably well on the extreme outside. Tea Chat displayed plenty of speed and will do better shortly.

TWO-YEAR-OLD PARADE. TEA TRADER SHOWS PROMISE. A two-year-old parade, arranged for the purpose of giving the youngsters a little experience in public before they are called upon to race, was held before racing com* menced at Ellerslie on Saturday, when no fewer than 10 two-year-olds took part They were sprinted down the straight from a barrier start, and with the colours up. and most of them behaved very eedately. None shaped better than Mr. R. P. Reid b chestnut colt Tea Trader, bv Tea Tray from Epitaph, who was running along very nicely iust in front of Morehu, by Lapidary from Iluephano, and N, Cunningham a bav by Lucullus from Fabttquette. lea .Trader is a member of E. Pope's team at lakanini, and he has previously shown promise on the Iraclts. He is Bred for early speed,: and, although it is unwise to place a, youngster on a high plnno simply because he has been first home in a two-year-old parade, lea. Trader has qualities which mpke him appear a good prospect for early spring racing. TROTTING HANDICAPPERS. The following trotting handicappers have been granted licences for this season:— Messrs. G.
