INTOXICATED MOTORIST.
ARREST IN THE CITY. STARTED ENGINE OF CAR. A charge that he had been intoxicated wjiile in charge of a motor-car was admitted by Frederick Tierney, aged 45, 'butcher (Mr. Allan Moody), in the Police Court yesterday. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that at about 6 p.m. on Saturday Constable Prestage saw accused leave a hotel in Karangahape Road and enter a motor-car, the engine of which he started. Realising that accused was under the influence of liquor, the constable accosted him. On the way to the Newton police station accused walked in an unsteady manner and the watch-house keeper had no hesitation in taking him into custody. Counsel said that although accused had three drinks on the day in question, he was in no way addicted to the taking of liquor. It was not a very serious case and at the time of the offence there was practically no traflic about. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, fined Tierney £lO and cancelled his driver's licence for three months. Default .was fixed at a month's imprisonment.
