GARDEN PARTY SPOILT.

HEAVY RAIN AT PALACE.

GREAT DAMAGE TO CLOTHES.

LONDON, July 9,

A torrential thunderstorm at the height of the festivities compelled the abandonment of the King's garden party at Holyrood Palace. The guests rushed to the gates to board trams and omnibuses, and scrambled for shelter. Parasols were useless and dresses, summer hats and silk hats were ruined.

Their Majesties returned to the palace from the tea marquee, but the Duchess of York and members of her suite were caught in the downpour. Thousands of spectators were drenched. The clothes of the guests were estimated to have cost £IOO,OOO, and the damage is assessed at £50,000.
