HEADMASTER RETIRES.
CEREMONY AT AVONDALE. MR. DARROWS LONG SERVICE. There was an attendance of more than 50 teachers at a, social function in St. Juile's Ilal}, Avondale, to bid farewell to Mr. ]I. A.. Darrow, who is retiring at (lie end of the month after having been headmaster of the Avondale school for 21 years. Mr. Darrow has also completed 40 years' service with tho Auckland Education Board. Miss E. M. Newton, who waft- associated with Mr. Darrow as infant mistress at the school for 16 years prior to her retirement in 1926, read a number of complimentary letters from former assistants at the school. Mr. F. E. Blakey, first assistant, who presided, made a presentation of a mahogany bridge table and two chairs to Mr. Darrow on behalf of the past and' present teachers. Reference to the recipient's sterling qualities were made by Mr. 11. A. V. Bollard, chairman of the Avondale school committee, and other speakers. Mr. Darrow, who-was born-at Thames, obtained his first position at the. Devonport school in 1891. After four years there he was transferred to the Bay of Islands, and later to the Coromandel and Ponsonby schools. Mr. Darrow then spent, three years as assistant master at Avondale. and, after four years at Parneil, returned to Avondale, to become for 21 years its headmaster.
