Arrested itt Auckland and remanded to Wellington, David Collinson, aged 35, appeared before Mr. W. 11. Woodward, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, charged with being in possession without lawful excuse ol forged Bank of New South Wales notes, knowing them to be forged. Sub-Inspector Ward asked for a further remand until May 20. Mr. J. Meltzer, who appeared for accused, applied for bail. He said that accused was a married man with one child, lie had been in business in Auckland for the last five years. Counsel's instructions were that there was a good defence to the charge. Nothing was known against accused, and he had never been in trouble before. Sub-Inspector Ward opposed bail. He emphasised the serious naturo of the charge. "We suggest," said the sub-in-spector, "that he is the leader in a conspiracy to issue these forged notes. They were issued in Auckland just before Anzac Day, and quite a large number have been traced to accused's possession." Mr. Meltzer': 1 may say, if my instructions are .correct, that no forged notes were found m his possession at any time. Tlio Magistrate: If it is suggested as part of tho police case, that accused is one who issues forged notes, then I must refuse bail for the protection of Ihe public! I must do f,o in case lie should continue to issue notes. Mr. Meltzer: I don't think it is suggosled that he is likely to continue issuing notes. TJ ie. Magistrate: No, Mr. Meltzer, I must exercise mv discretion against you. Bail will-be refused.
