NOTES ON THE RACING.

SIX FALLS IN HURDLES.

SEVERAL OUTSIDERS SCORE. GREAT FINISH IN PUNI HACK. The Bombay Hurdles was a chapter of accidents and six of the runners fell. High Pitch, second choice in the betting, was always going nicely once the field settled down, and when Whakama fell about five furlongs from home he assumed command to win decisively from Pouri, who came from a long way back to pet second. Quinsilia was a poor third and St. Ames was fourth. Abbess led to the first fence, where she and Patutahi fell. After that Loving Cup, Semi-circle, Whaknroa and Arch "Eagle fell at succeeding fences. Arch Eagle looked a likoly placegetter when he fell at the last fence, but nothing ever appeared likely to beat High Pitch, although Pouri came home very well. Luminary, the favourite, was not prominent, but he may do better next time out.

With the assistance of a beautiful run on the rails Gay Lap, the favourite, just got home from Bronzo Tray in tho first division of the Pukekawa Hack Handicap. Production, Gay Lap and Captain Dollar were prominent in the early running, Production being in front at the turn, where Wild Country, Rekaraurau, Brqnzo Tray, Daycoma and Gay Lap were all in a bunch. Good Run on the Rails.

Tho leaders went wido at the bend and Gay Lap slipped through on the rails to beat Bronze Tray by three-parts of a length. Sub-Editor was three lengths away third and Holly Holm waß fourth. Bronze Tray was off tho course at the turn, otherwise he might have beaten the winner. Captain Dollar again displayed plenty of speed and as soon as his condition is right he should

Only five started in the Harrisville Flying Handicap and there was a complete upset when Hampton Park, who returned a doublofigure dividend, won easily from the favourite. Gold Money. Hard Words and Hampton Park cleared away from the others .quickly and at the end of three furlongs they were eight, lengths clear of Paganelli. Hampton Talk had Hard Words beaten at the distaneo and went on to win by four lengths from Gold Money, who cut the tiring Hard Words out of second. Paganelli was fourth and Big Bertha last. The winner won well and Gold Money finished on solidly after being a long way back. Hard Words displayed a torrent of speed, but failed to run on and Paganelli could not handle the going. Manawhenua's Cup "Win. A fine finish in the Pukekohe Cup saw Manawhenua down the favourite, Antique, by half a head. Sir Mond was quickly prominent, but Clopton ran to the lead before the leaving the strnisht and he was the pacemaker along the back from Eager Rose, British King, Cynthia N. and Sir Mond. Clapton and British King were the leaders across the top from Manawhenua, but Manawhenua was just in front from Clopton, British King, Royal Doulton and Antique at the straight entrance. Just inside the furlong post Antique appeared likely to win. but Manawhenua hung on well to just beat him home. Royal Doulton was two and a-half lengths away third and Eager Rose was fourth. Next to finish were Brampton, Cynthia N. and Clopton.

Manawhenua stripped a very fit horse and ho displayed plenty of grit when challenged by Antique at the finish. Royal Doulton and Eager Rose' ran solid races, but the others were all well beaten. Clopton endeavoured to make the most of his chance when he got to the front, but failed to run on in the going. British King looked likely when he was up with the leaders across the top, but his saddle slipped forward on his wither and that settled his chance, as his rider was unable to handle him properly at the finish. Defeat o! King Ford.

Backed down to odds-on for the second division of the Pukekawa Hack Handicap King Ford flattered the hopes of his supporters by turning into the straight several lengths clear, but he stopped badly and was beaten into third place. When a furlong had been covered Kins Ford was in command from King Peg and Sea Song. The field then strung out and King Ford came into tho straight clear of King Peg and Merry Lu. with Rangikaha coming fast. Han si - kalia finished on strongly to win by half a length from King Peg. who defeated King Ford by a similar margin. Principal was fourth succeeded by Merry Lu. Catch Em and Catulus.

The winner came from a good way back and won nicely to return a double-figure dividend. King Peg ran one of his be3t races, but King Ford stopped badly at the end. Principal was going very fast at the end after being badly placed mo9t of the way, but none of the others gave any trouble.

United's Good Finish. Royal Gallant, United and Teels were best backed for the Te Kohanga Handicap and they filled the places in reverse order. Teels and Queen Arpa were smartest away, Teels leading into the straight from Hawthorn, with Royal Gallant handy on the rails and United next. Teels stayed on in the run home to win by a length from United, who finished out near the judge's box. Royal Gallant was a length and a-half away third and Amber Link was fourth. Then followed Hawthorn and Queen Arpa. Teels was lucky to beat United, who was not at all well handled at the finish. Less than ft furlong from the post United was almost level with the winner, but for some unaccountable reason he was pulled right out to the outside. The check cost him some ground and, although he went, very fast over tho last hundred yards, he could not get up. A Spectacular Finish. There was a wonderful finish in the Puni Hack Handicap, six horses finishing within a length. The winner was First Lap. an outsider, who finished fast on the outside to just beat Trishna. Tambourine and VV ee Prince were quickly in the lend from laurua and so they raced for about five furlongs when Trustee went up on the outside and Tambourine went back slightly. Trustee and Wee Prince led round the bend from Tambourine, Te Money and Taurua with the others bunching, i At least eight horses had 1 winning shnnees in the last furlong, but First Laii finished best to win by a neck from Trislna. who beat Te Money by the same margin. Alloy was right up fourth followed by Wee Prince. Sub-Editor and Taurua.

First Lap finished in great stylo and returned a double-figure dividend. Trishna and Alloy also finished strongly, but lo Money li st weakened near the -post, buofiditor mad Taurua also ran good races. Taurua Icing a shade unlucky. Victory For Chief Joy. Chief Joy. at a good price, scored a very dec sivo victory over tho favourite, \an dyke, in the Paerata Handicap, which was the best betting race of the day. Chief Joy and Envoy were smartest away only to give way after going slightly over a fuilon<' to Telrarchate. Neanng the top Hampton" Park ran up on the outside of let rar(■})!,te and they made play into the straight from Vandyke and Chief Joy. Once they straightened up Chief Joy came throir'h to win by half a length from Vandyke.' with Ruffles and Volimond a neck away a dead-heat for third. Next to finish were Standfast and King Willonyx. Owing to the soft going, Chief Joy was at a better price than would otherwise have been the case bnl, ho handled the conditions well. Vandyke was beaten, but not disgraced as he began from the extreme outside and had lo rover more ground than any of the others Tetrarchuto was not well ridden and would ha \ e been closer if he had not been made so much use of early. Mr A. W. Gordon, the stipendiary steward in attendance, had occasion to speak to several jockeys in connection with incidents in connection with racing. Jno whom hi questioned was F. Foster, rider■ of Luminary in the Bombay Hurdles. Fostei e explanation was accepted, but he was vised to ride his mount out in the future.
