RUNNING AT HAWERA.

GREAT NORTHERN HORSES.

AURORA BOREALIS* FORM. BIRKBECK AND NUKUMAI. [FROM OUII OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Saturday. Omeo is in good order for the winter jumping campaign. He was short of a race 011 the first day at Hawera; but on the second day he was always goine like a winner, showing marked improvement. Omeo's next start will be at Wanganui. and all going well, lie will race at Te Kuili, followed by the Great Northern meeting, lie claims engagements in both hurdle and steeplechase events, but according to piescnt intentions he will confine his efforls to steeplochasing. L. Jarvis w-ill be his jockey whenever possible. Aurora Borealis will bo improved by her two races at Hawera, where she ran well each day. She .'ouud the weight \cry troublesome on both days and in addition hooked tho sod wall on the second day on each of the two occasions it had to bo crossed. This look a lot of steam out oi her, in fact, the second time she nearly came down As she is now so well up in the weights in cross-country events her connections may find it more profitable to return her to hurdling.. At present she plaims engagements in hurdle events both at Wanganui and Auckland, and judged by her Hawera form she should run well at either meeting.

Birkbeck put in a brilliant run at the end of the Egmont Steeplechase to win comfortably after giving a fine display ovei his fences. He did not go Quito so well on the second day, when he finished third, but performed satisfactorily all tho same for a horse who has not been overlong in work. Birkbeck promises to be one of the leading lights of the jumping season. Condition ol Nultumai.

When Nukuinai won the Egmont Steeplechase in 192G at tbo first time of asking over country he created a great impression, for his form over hurdles and on the tint under winter conditions was the very best. Bar one or two flashes of form he has never done any real good as a steeplechaser since being many removes from his quality as a hurdler. Sinco he was last raced iNuluimai has left the stable of A. M. Wright, which sheltered him throughout his long and successful career, and he iR now under M. Conway at Hawera. The veteran looks veiy well at the present time, carrying plenty of condition, and he ran two fair races in the .steeplechases at the Egmont On the second day he was able to separate the favourites, Omeo and Birkbeck, at the finish, his showing being an improvement that suggests future possibilities. Hurdlers not up to Average.

The hurdlers seen out at Egmont were not a good lot. Generally one or two of the horses seen in action there early in the season win good races later on. Ihis year they looked much below the average. Zippor won his double with-ridiculous ease, nothing getting nuar him once he had settled into his stride. He is :i free rwiand bold jumper, who will not be troubled by big weights, but at the name time lie may find difficulty in holding his own when it comes to longer journeys against the better class hurdlers. . Fine Acre and Nucleus were his stroll, est opponents so far as class ;s concerned, and neither was in condition to offer serious opposition. Fine Acie ion l. the steeplechase the first (lay and returned to hurdling on the second. He gave two fall displays, but is troubled with chronic soreness. Bennanee. who has good flat form to recommend him, gave a poor display on the first duv. but improved at his secopd start and it looks as if he will come a 1 right with experience. He is in the right hands to do so. Cnllapat, another fair flat horse making a start at hurdling, ran two creditable races, running second after his nrfil day's experience. He may never reach pood class as a jumper, as he is a horse who went in the wind, but rroperly placed he will pay his way. The Flat Performers.

Merry Damon was the best flat performei at*the "Egmont meeting, and us lie has now reached an advanced ape :or handicariptrs it does not say a great deal for tho call )ie of the opposition. Black Luke, of course, gave him weight the first day and did not run on the second, so is excluded fioni criticism, but the others did not show up too well against tho veteran. L aitonu. who beat him on the first day, made only a fair showing on the second, while nilvt-i----mine once more tailed to carry weight in the vicinity of nine stone. Hopwood's penchant for winter conditions made his showings at Ilnwera of more than ordinary interest. He has not done anything of note for a considerable time, so that he is now down at the. bottom of the handicaps. He ran two fair races. He is only a six-year-old, so should be capable of improvement. T . Llandudno was not taken to »«cin. where his first np:>cjnmce over hurdles vn.awaited with interest, on account of knowing himself i-bout at Ins last sta I It is intended to race him over hurdles dui'"paiigolin'made bis reappearance on North Island courses in the hurdle race on tne race" - although" h/Thifted in the middle ss. ably do better when it comes to " chnsin?. at which it is intended to to hi in.
