McLiver in the Police Court yesterday, in asking,for leniency on behalf of Rohert -Francis Singe, aged 46, who was charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. He pleaded guilty, Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that at 11.45 a.m. on Saturday last Detectiveß Nalder and Packman arrested accused in Quay Street. When arrested accused had in his pQssession £37 10s and a quantity of belting material, including cards in connection with races being held that day in Wellington and Paeroa. He had takeii 33 small bets, for which £8 6s had been received,' while charts found showed that he had laid 64 doubles. Accused, who was a waterside worker between race meotings, had been fined £ls for a similar offence on March 2, 1929. Counsel said accused made bets in a very small way, receiving sums of from 'ls to 2s 6d. He was really only obliging his friends.
