INCIDENT AT NEWMARKET.

ACCUSED SENT FOR TRIAL. "When accused Saw me ho tried to strike me with a bag hook," said Constable Ilendren in the Police Court yesterday, whfcn Thomas Frank Carey, aged 41, labourer (Mr. Allan Moody), was charged with breaking and entering the shop of David Teed, Limited, Newmarket, with intent to commit a crime therein.

Geoffrey Speakman said that at about 10.25 p.m. on March 12 ho saw accused shaking, the door of Teed's shop. Each time a pedestrian passed accused stood aside against the window so as not to be observed. When accused gave a hard push and forced the door open yritness informed a constable.

Corroborative evidence was given by Victor Baker and Albert It. Bell.

Constable Ilendren said that when ho entered the shop tho door was ajar, .the padlock fastenings having been wrenched off. Accused was standing behind tho counter, where the cash register was placed, but whep lie saw witness lie went into a back room. Accused, who, was sober, attempted to strike witness with a hook: A struggle followed, and. accused was eventually arrested and handcuffed. He had 10s lid in small coins in his possession. Continuing, the constable said the broken point of the bag hook was found lying in the doorway to the shop. The padlock hasp, which had been forced away from the door, showed marks that had apparently been made with the hook.. Henry Gregory, managing director of David Teed, Limited, said £1 3s 3d was missed from tho till on the night of the alleged offence. A bottle of wine was discovered in n back room, where it had been left by an intruder. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, committed Carey, who pleaded not guilty, to the Supreme ' Court for trial. _ Bail of £IOO was renewed, accused being ordered to report weekly to tho police. A further charge, of stealing a bottle of wine, valued at 3s, tho property of tho Union Steam Ship Company, Limited, was preferred against accused, and is to be dealt with summarily at a later date,
