EXPLOSION IN FURNACE.
MAN'S FORTUNATE ESCAPE. RAIN OF BURNING COAL. [BY TELEGRATO. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.'] WHANGAREI, Tuesday. A narrow escape from injury was experienced by Mr. J. Carter when drawing a boiler fire at the Ivamo Potteries yesterday. When he broke up the fire with a rake, preparatory to putting more coal on, the gases accumulated from overnight exploded. The fire and soot were thrown to all parts of the building. Luckily Mr. Carter had turned his back to the explosion, but bricks and blazing coal were hurled, past his head.- Just at that timo Mr. Fred. Kells, underviewer of the company's coalmine, entered. • In the thick soot doud it was difficult to sco Mr. Carter, who was temporarily blinded by the Hying smut. Ho was unhurt, although the force of the explosion was sufficient, to take an inch bolt off the furnace door.
