DANNEVIRKE MEETING.

PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY.

PROSPECTS. IN' THE CUP.

EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND. The proceeds of the , Dannevirke Racine Club's Autumn Meeting to be held to-day and to-morrow ara to be given to the earthquake relief fund. The principal race to-day is the Dannevirke Cup, in which Star Stranger is top.weight. Tlio great old veteran The Hawk has been showing a little form lately and in epite of his 12 years he must bo given a very fair chance. There is material for an interesting raco and the same applies to the open-sprint event, tho President's Handicap, in which Hunting Day is set to concede weight to some speedy horsoe.

Details of tho fields are as follows:

TROTTING HANDICAPS.

MEETING OF OWNERS. FIXED PENALTIES FAVOURED. A well-attended .meeting of trotting owners and trainers was held at Nowmarket laßt evening, to discuss handicapping. Mr. R, J. Stirling presided. The following resolutions, to be placed before the Auckland Trotting Club committee, were carried unanimously:— That this meeting favours the adoption of fixed penalties for first and second horses only, based on the present system down to a 4.26 two-miles class; after that, mark a 12yds penalty for first horse only i all penalties to be regulated from tho mark the horse starts off, irrespective of the class of the race.

That this meeting considers the time has arrived for the appointment of separate handicappers for the North lyid South Islands to obviate the monopoly' existing at present, whore one handicapper operates for the larger clubs.

Messrs. R. J. Stirling, S. M. August and F. J. Smith were appointed a deputation to wait on. the Auckland Club.

It was also resolved that the delegates bo empowered to ask tho Auckland Club to allow Mr. C. E. Goosman to frame tho handicaps for the relief meeting, in order to give tlmt official a chance to operate the present system on tho better-claßß horses.

MEETING ABANDONED.

OAMARU CLUB'S DECISION.

[BY TELEGRAM. —rRESS ASSOCIATION.] OAMARU, Tuesday.

Owing to • the poor nominations received the Oamaru Jockey Club this morning decided to abandon its meeting which was to have been held on March 23.

FIRST FLIGHT IN THAMES CUP.

STEPPING-STONE FOR HAWERA.

When First Flight, off 4.45, failed over two miles at tho Whangarei trotting meeting and was placed on 4.43 on the first day at Auckland last month, the connections of the pacer expressed dissatisfaction and would not accept the mark. However, First Flight won over a mile and a-half on the concluding day at Epsom from a 3.29 mark and the manner in which sho came through at the right end suggested that she would see out the extra distance all right. That her owner, Mr. Wilfred Johnßtone, wa3 satisfied on this score is apparent, as ho has entered her for tho Thames Cup, a 4.40 limit event. Even allowing for her success at Epsom over the shorter journey, it looks as if First Flight will be giving away time to start in the Thames Cup, Howover, it can bo taken for granted that tho trainer, R. A. McMillan, expects her to stay much better than she did at Whangarei.' First Flight is bred on sound staying lines, being by Blue Mountain King from Guiding Star, und she should improve with age. She is endowed with a rare turn of speed and requires only to become moro solid to show to advantage over a two-miles course. She may make sufficient progress in the interval to bo dangerous in the Thames Cup and a win in that raco would fijjd her well placed in the 4.38 class Hawcra Cup at Eaßter.
