ELLERSLIE TRAINING.

CANDIDATES FOR PAEROA.

WERATA SPRINTS NICELY. PURIRI PARK VERY BRIGHT. After the rain on Monday. the tracks at Elleralie were in beautiful order for training operations yesterday, when the chief interest was provided by horses with engagements at the Ohinemuri meeting at Paeroa on Saturday and l'uesday. There were soveral gallops on the course proper, where the flags were out 20ft., but most of the galloping was accomplished on the No. 3 grass. On the course proper, Speedfast (Ludlow) defeated Hawthorn (Parsons) and Bonny Mumble (Mcßae) over four furlongs in 50 4-ss. Speedfast did his work well, and, although he is on the small side, he has been making sufficient progress lately to be a possibility for a juvenile handicap before the end of the season.

Puriri Park (L. Manson) and Justify (Simpson) were associated over Bix furlongs in 1.20, They wero together at tho finish and both worked soundly. Puriri Park is bright and well and should be ready for another good effort at Paeroa on Saturday. ' Sir Val Improving. Sir Val (light boy) was better than Royal Gallant (Fergus) over four furlongs in 50 4-ss. Sir Val is steadily improving and Royal Gallant is also making progross. The latter has not dono much sprining latoly and should continue to mako headway in the next fow weeks, AVerata (Ludlow) ran rijrht away from Golden Spahi (Fergus) in tho last furlong of a five furlongs sprint to beat him easily in 1.4 2-5. Although Wcrata is not carrying as much condition as he did last season, ho has beon doing his work well, und for that reason cannot bo disregarded in his coming engagements. Golden Spahi did not go as well as he has dono in some of his recent gallops, but ho is very bright and appears to be doing well in himself. Gay Idea (K. Gill) and Red Lion (light boy) sprinted five furlongs in 1.4 4-ss, with little between them at the finish. Gay Idea is better in a race than on tho track, and, as sho seems all the better for the run she had at Pukekohe, she should give a good account of herself at Paeroa, On the No. 3 grass Eager Rose easily ran six furlongs in 1.22 4-5. She has come through hor recent racing well and will probably race again at Paeroa. Ruling King completed a useful task with three furlongs in 43 2-ss, and Brown Princo was timed to jun tho same distance in 40 2-ss. A. Robartson has effected considerable improvement in Brown Prince, who will bo ready for a race shortly. Progress ol Dark Marble, Sir Mond (McCurdy) and Katarina (Watson) were on terms at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.6 1-5. Sir Mond, who is holding his condition remarkably well for a horse who has done so much racing, was going the easier at tho finish. In spite of his failure at Pukekohe, Sir Mond should not be without prospects at Paeroa. Dark Warble (Simpson) and United (Watson) sprinted five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. There was little botween them at the finish, although Dark Marblo held a slight advantage. Dark Marblo benefited by his racing at To Aroha and may perform in improved fashion at Paeroa. Gay Cockade encompassed a round in 1.44 3-5, running the last six furlongs in 1.21 3-5. He moved freely throughout and is now progressing nicely in preparation for the autumn meetings, > Brampton and Scotland Yard were allowed to run along over three furlongs in 435. Scotland Yard has not been asked to do a great deal since joining J. Buchanan's team, but his trainer will now begin to send Jym along in earnest.

NEW ZEALAND HORSES.

ARRIVAL AT SYDNEY.

PHAR LAP'S ENGAGEMENTS

(Received March 10, 11.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 10.

A number of New Zealand racehorses, including Mr. Webster's team, arrived to-day in good order.

Phar Lap's engagements at the Sydnoy autumn meeting are:—All Aged Stakes, Cumberland Stakes, and Autumn Stakes, at Randwjck.

BRED IN THE PURPLE. JEWEL ELECT'S LINEAGE. Jewel Elect, who won the Trial Handicap at Hult Park on Saturday, registering 3.44 3-5 for a mile and five furlongs from a 3.58 mark, is a six-year-old pacer of whom little or nothing was heard until the South Wairarapa Christmas Meeting, where he showed winning form. He is trained at Carterton by J. "Walker, who this season has taken the promising Highland Derby under his charge. Jewel Elect is by Jewel Chimes, who won tho Auckland Cup in 1913 for Mr. J. D. Piper, while on the dam's sido he traces back to high-class American blood. Jewel Elect was got from a Brookholm maro and B'rookholm was own son of Blackwood Abdullah and Watlaes, a daughter of Berlin and Messenger Maid. Blackwood Abdallah had a double strain of Mambrino Chief blood and was closely related to Hambletonian 10. Both Blackwood Abdallah and Messenger Maid were imported to New Zealand in 1882 and the mare 12 years later produced to Rothschild Jessie Palm, one of tho greatest trotters the Dominion has seen. With such blood coursing through his veins Jewel Elect should be capable of reaching a higher plane as tho season advances.
