DISCHARGE OF WORKMEN.
TWO HUNDRED GIVEN NOTICE WAITAKI ELECTRICITY WORKS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Two hundred men have been discharged from the Waitaki hydro-electric works, according to a statement made by the engineer-in-charge, Mr. R. H. Packwood. He donied a report that very drastic reductions had been made and said 200 men had had to be dispensed with because the summer was an off season for the work.
At, the end of November there were 1200 men on the works. To-day the total was 1000. Mr. Packwood said many men had left of their own accord to take up the seasonal work of shearing and harvesting.
