FORTUNATE CHANCE.

A VALUABLE BEETLE. The fortunate chance that led to the discovery of a beetle of much value to was described during proceedings in the Supreme Court yesterday by Mr. F. C. Lippiatt, an Otahuhu grapegrower of 40 years' experience. He said the beetle had come from the tailings of linne mauure after screening and it was ho who had discovered it. lie first noticed that. something was eating one end of the glasshouse clean of mealy bug and it gradually spread until it cleaned the whole house. It proved to bo a beetle which did no harm, lie explained that it was bad practice to fumigate a glasshouse with cyanide as it killed the beetle and allowed the mealy bug to spread unchecked. It' the mealy bug was allowed to go on, a .'grower would soon got no grapes all.
