TRADE OF AUCKLAND.

WHOLESALE AND RETAIL.

NORMAL BUSINESS CONTINUES. PRODUCE MARKETS REVIEW. Normal trading continues to be recorded by Auckland business houses. Most Christmas lines have come to hand, and retailers, generally, are preparing for the rush of Christinas business, expected to start within the next fortnight or so. Jn the hardware trade there has been a slight seasonal increase in sales of certain lines. Lawnmowers, for instance, are meeting with a steady demand. Drapers and mercers report normal trading. CORRUGATED % IRON. Manufacturers' quotations for corrugated iron and other galvanised products have shown slight reductions over the past week or so. Any decline in price, however, will naturally not affect the local retail market for about three months. SAGO AND TAPIOCA. . Slight reductions have been announced in tho market for sago and tapioca. JELLIES. A seasonal demand for jellies is just starting. Prices show little chango on those of last year. PEPPER. A slight reduction has been announced in current quotations for pepper. MARGARINE. Bulk margarine is now offered at a reduction of id a lb. PRUNES. Considerable interest is being shown in new season's prunes, particularly in the larger sizes, and stocks landing go into immediate consumption. The market has a very firm tone. Home sizes, 30's to 40' a in particular, are becoming scarce. One of the features of business this year promises to be tho reappearance of the 18-24 prunes, which have not been offered in Auckland for some years on account of the comparatively high prices. HONEY. Stocks of honey in beekeepers' hands are vcporlod to be practically exhausted.. New Reason's honey is not expected until Feb- • luary. In the meantime merchants should be well supplied with blended honey, the pal eg of which have increased over the past year or so. CLOVES. Overseas shippers advise an advance in quotations for clove 3. RAISINS. The market for oil-blenched raisins has advanced approximately id a lb below that for golden bleached. BEANS. Although quotations for Madagascar lima beans for January-February shipment from London remain steady, slightly lower offers are being made for later delivery. Stocks on spot aro now very light and are likely to be sold before the first of the new season's beans arrive about March next. DATES. The first shipments of tho new season's dates are now to hand and the lower cost is having tho effect of greatly increased sales. The market for forward shipment from London remains firm. DRIED FRUITS. Shipments of the fust of the new season's Californian dried fruits are just to liand and are meeting with a strong dem%nd. The market for all Californian fruits is very firm, fractional advances on several varieties being recorded in this week's cables. CHERRIES. Lower quotations aro again available for new season's French cherries, both crystallised and drained. ,but the higher rale of duty will have the effect of increasing buyers' costs. There is a strong local demand for both drained and crystallised at present. POTATOES. Little movement has been shown in grain, seed and produce circles over tho week. Stocks of Southern potatoes are almost exhausted and business is confined almost entirely to new season's potatoes, which are offering freely. Quotations vary, but in the markets good quality new potatoes are making around 10s a cwt and in the shops are selling around 7lb for Is. ONIONS. Stocks of onions held on tho spot are not heavy and the spot' market is very firm, with merchants' through Btore quotations varying considerably. MAIZE. Little life has been shown in the maize market. In tho Bay of Plenty f.o.r. quotations for direct railings to South of Auckland stations remain steady around 4s lOd a bushel. Gisborne sellers ask 4s Gd f.o.b. for prompt shipment. OATS AND CHAFF. The market for oats and chaff is unchanged. B Gartons sell around 4s 7d a bushel through Auckland stores. Southern chuff is offered at from £lO 5s to £lO 10s a ton. Tasmanian chnff is selling through Auckland stores around £3 10s a ton. WHEAT. The market for whettt is unchanged. Through store, Auckland, merchants ask 7s lid to Ss a bushel. THE CITY MARKETS. YESTERDAY'S AUCTIONS. MOST LINES WELL SUPPLIED. Most varieties' of field and garden produce met with a steady demand in the City Markets yesterday. Ample supplies of all seasonal lines came forward. Stunner apples sold freely, but other varieties wcro not keenly sought. Canadian apples made up to 20s a case, but only a few sold at anything approaching the toj) iirices. Strawberries aro now coming forward in increasing quantities and prices eased considerably. Gooseberries are also coming forward moro freely. Hothouse tomatoes made lower prices, largely as tho result of a heavy shipment of Fijian tomatoes now on the riiarket. Stocks of bananas aro rather light, but a fresh shipment is due on the Tofua next week. A few Australian cherries, which camo by this week's steamer, were in rather indifferent condition. There was only a poor demand for Australian pineapples. ' > lleavy supplies of new season's potatoes arc now coming forward and indifferent quality potatoes are becoming harder to sell. Californian onions aro in short supply and the market has hardened considerably. All seasonal vegetables aro offering in ample supply. The egg market shows practically no movement. Farmers' butter is in rather short supply. Trices ranged as follows FRUIT.
