OBITUARY.

MR. ANDREW McLEAN. lhe death (if an old resident of Papakura, Mr. A ndrev.' McLean, occurred at his residence in Wood Street yesterday morning, in ]iis 951 li year. Mr. McLean left Greenock on December 7, 1864, by the ship Viola, reaching Auckland in March the following year. On arrival tlio passengers were taken to Clevedon in cutters up the Wairoa River. Jn those | days navigation of the river was somewhat difficult, the cutler in which Mr. ! McLean's family landed being stuck on the sandspit for two days. Willi others of the new arrivals Air. McLean went to tho Thames goldlields, but after four months there, returned to Clevedon, whcie lie followed his trade as a carpenter. After spending some years at Clevedon, Mr. McLean removed to Papakura. where lie lived for the past 40 years. Ho could relate many interesting stories of the early days, before tho railway ran through Papakura, when residents often had to walk all the way to Auckland to obtain provisions. The funeral will tuko place to-day. MR. JOHN WARD. Ihe death or Mr. John Ward occurred at his residence, 9, Rusk in Street, ParHell, on Wednesday, at the ago of 86 years. Born i;i Cornwall, Mr. Ward came to New Zealand at the ago of 20, and settled in Auckland. Ho was a carpenter and was employed during tho laying of the railway line from Auckland to Onehunga. Ho was also for many years in tho employ of tho Auckland City Council. Air. \\ ard was married 11 years after his arrival here, his wife, who died in 1912, being Aliss Agnes Thomas, who came from England with her parents as a child. For 25 years Afr. Ward was a member of tho Auckland Salvage Corps, and he was also a sergeant in the Auckland Engineer Volunteers for 20 years. Ho was an early member of (he ATanchester Unity Fountain of Friendship Lodge. Mr. Ward is survived by threo sons and two daughters. There are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. MRS. ANNE J. JACKSON. The death occurred this week, at the ago of 85 years, of Airs. Anne Jane Jackson, widow of the lato Air. Joshua Jackson, who was for many years a sharebroker in Auckland. Mrs. Jackson came to New Zealand with her parents from County Tyrone, Ireland. 68 years ago and tho family settled in the North of Auckland. She married Afr. Jackson at Thames, where they lived for several years. The family then came to Auckland. They settled at Northcoto 45 years ago, and Arrs. Jackson was a prominent member of tho Northcoto Methodist Church. The sons aro Alessrs. J. F. Jackson, H. Jackson and A. Jackson, while a fourth, Mr. J. G. Jackson, of tho Main Body, died of wounds. Tho daughters aro Airs. W. ,T. Hulbert, Airs. W. Simpson, Mrs. 0. Guest and Aliss Ruth Jackson. Tho funeral took place yesterday afternoon at Purewa cemetery.
