CANTERBURY SHOW.
RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES. LARGER HORSE CLASSES. [by telegraph.—rnEsa association.] CHRISTCHTJRCH. Thursday. The Canterbury Agricultural and Fastora! Show was opened in dull weather. The entries number 3109, the greatest on record. Tho most remarkablo increase is in tho horse classes, where the quality all round is excellent. The attendance, never impressive on judging day, was less than usual. Tho sheep classes were all well filled and tho entry represented the very best quality. Tho cattle sections wero strong, especially in the dairy classes, but the fat cattle wero disappointing, doubtless owing to the backward season. Tho entry even of light horses was larger than last year, and the quality of the Clydesdales was exceptionally good. Among the visitors to-day was the Minister of Agriculture, tho Hon. A. J. Murdoch, who spent much time in looking over the stock and other exhibits. In an interview, the Minister expressed his gratification with what he had seen on this the first occasion upon which he had attended the Canterbury Metropolitan Show. "It is the best show I have seen," he added. "The sheep section is wonderfully good. The show of cattle is a fine one, the Shorthorns and Jerseys being very good, but it is hard to individualise. Taking them all round, the cattle are an excfllent lot. "I was much impressed with the farm implements bureau conducted by Lincoln College in conjunction with tho Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. I think it is a splendid idea, and I hope that next year the Department of Agriculture will do something on the same lines."
