PROTECTION WANTED.
IRON AND STEEL TRADE. DEBATE IN THE COMMONS. (Received November 7, 5.33 p.m.) British Wireless. RUGBY, Nov. G. 11l the House of Commons last evening a private member's motion urging tlio Government to take immediate measures to stem the decline in the activities of the iron and steel industry was debated. Conservative members urged the adoption of protection by tariffs. It was pointed out that the wages paid in the industry in Britain are about double thoso paid on fho Continent. Subsidies were also advocated. On behalf of the Government the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, Mr. W. R. Smith, refused to consider a subsidy or tariffs and dwelt on the importance of the reorganisation of the industry. He stated that consultations were still proceeding between representatives of the Government and the industry on regional organisation.
